Celebrating International Women’s Day: Dineshi Peiris

18 March, 2022

Last week we celebrated International Women’s Day – a day which celebrates the many triumphs of women and our ongoing journey towards gender parity. However, it is also a day to acknowledge the gaps we still have in equality, and encourages us to take action in whichever ways we can. This year’s theme, #BreakTheBias, is all about  forging women’s equality in today’s society.

Diversity and equality are integral to our culture at First AML – we love celebrating all walks of life and showcasing the amazing talent we have here that’s helping drive our company forward. We speak to some of the incredible women in our business about what IWD means to them.

Today we chat to software developer Dineshi, to hear about her journey so far and her take on IWD.

What does a typical day look like for you?
As a software engineer, I generally spend most of my working day developing code. The rest of the work day I spend on meetings and events.

After dinner, I spend a couple of hours taking a walk, surfing the web, and talking to family.

What motivates you to go to work everyday?
The factors that motivate me to go to work every day are:

  • Learning new things
  • Desire to be the best version of myself at what I do
  • Being passionate towards the job role

What is your biggest achievement that you’re most proud of (in or outside of work)?
The biggest achievement that I am most proud of is the results that I achieved in the Advanced Level Physical Science stream. This is the turning point which allowed me to start my roller coaster journey in the IT field.

While studying in the Advanced Level Physical Science stream, I was also one of house captains and a senior prefect of my school, and I spent time playing badminton, doing track & field events and extra curricular activities in school as well. Most importantly, the results that I achieved allowed me to pursue my degree in Computer Science at University of Colombo. This was really special for me to get to where I am now.

What importance do you place on gender diversity in workplaces?
I think it is really important that we have both female and male employees at workplaces. Nowadays women and men both are equally talented and qualified in many ways and this should be represented in the industry.

How did you end up doing what you’re doing?
I have been fascinated with Mathematics since primary school. Right from my childhood, my dream was to become an Engineer. For several years, my school accredited me with various awards for my performance in Mathematics. So, I just followed my childhood dream to become an Engineer despite immense hurdles.

What do you like about the tech space?
I am very much interested in the tech space because it’s growing, challenging and there’s a lot more space for discovery, development and innovation.

What do you think the tech industry can do better?
I think the tech industry can do better to support their employees wellbeing and mental health, because technology has more the capability to improve wellbeing more broadly these days.

Tell us about a woman who inspires you and why it is you think they’re awesome.
My mother is the woman who inspired me to be where I am today. She was right behind me in every step I took and I know she will be the same forever. She is the only person I know who can love unconditionally. I’m glad that I have made her proud of my achievements so far.

And if you could ask them a question, what would you want to know?
I would ask her how she loves us unconditionally.

Lastly, what‘s your favourite book, movie and song?
Book – Actually, I am not really a bookworm but I must say T.B.Ilangaratne’s Amba Yahaluwo.
Movie – Titanic, American romantic adventure film by James Cameron.
Song – One of my all time favourites is “Stand by Me” by Ben E. King.
